LETTERS

Hello,

I just wanted to thank you for the humanitarian work you undertake, especially in light of the extreme and negative opposition towards illegal immigration.

Perhaps if we stopped paying our movie stars 20 million dollars for single movie we would have more money to pay our teachers and police officers... but instead the richer get richer and we continue to scapegoat the poorest of the poor.

As far as I'm concerned, the entire history of mankind has been one massive migration.  Considering how unfairly and cruelly the United States was wrested from the hands of Native American Indians, it's odd that we would be so opposed to somebody invading what we consider our national birthright.  Quite frankly, none of us would be here (other than Native Americans) if our own ancestors hadn't decided to migrate, and judging from the results to the Native Population, our ancestors did far more damage than any illegal immigrant population has done.  It's not my place to tell somebody that they can't better their life, and who's to say I wouldn't do the exact same thing in their situation?  I don't have the "right" to live here, I just got lucky and was born here.  Others weren't so lucky, and I won't fault them for wanting a better life for themselves and their children.

Quite frankly, I don't believe that illegal immigration is having a negative impact on my life (we are still the richest nation in the world!), but even if it was, what right to I have to push others down so that I can have more?  I'm not a Christian, but I know what Christian values are supposed to be, and I'm pretty sure that goodwill towards others as long as it doesn't cost you anything isn't one of them; however, I think that illegal immigration has just as many positive aspects as it does negative, and I believe that these positives outweigh the negative.

I guess things have changed.

Thank you for trying to make a difference, you will always have my support.

Sincerely,

Jean Lewis
