Check out the fridge we were able to get our friends at Camino de Salvacion shelter thanks to all of you! Their previous fridge was faulty to the point that it would freeze and spoil most perishable foods, wasting their groceries, and didn’t fit nearly as much as this new one. We are so happy to know that with this purchase, our migrant families will get the proper food and meals they deserve.
This past month, in addition to supporting this shelter, Border Angels provided monetary support to 15 other shelters. With these funds, the shelters pay for their groceries, rent, utilities and bills. Many of these shelters depended on physical donations in kind prior to the pandemic, and with the border restrictions were left without any aide. It is because of this that your donations are incredibly important to us, as they are supporting so many families and saving lives! We thank you all so much for the continued support and generosity.

​This weekend we were able to host another educational group tour/presentation! Thank you so much to Point Loma Nazarene University’ Ministry With Mexico for their Virtual Border Pilgrimage with Border Angels. We are so happy to partner with learning opportunities such as theirs which enables their members to engage in very needed discussions for so many important topics, in this case the border and immigration. We were able to connect via zoom while we were out in the desert on Sunday, to ensure the safety of all participants while still getting a glimpse into our work. Whatever the “new normal” may be for schools and education, we are excited to continue being a part of it!

​We are headed into the weekend with some amazing news, we have freed yet another person from detention through our Familias Reunidas Bond Program, Makari! He is an Ethiopian asylum seeker who was in detention for 3 months. He was detained in the Otay Mesa Detention Center, which continues to have an extreme number of COVID cases, and is a young, brave man of 22.
Although it continues to frustrates us how young the men we have been bonding lately are, we are so proud of the resilience of each and every one of our bond recipients. We also are so grateful to the success of our bond program, and in awe of the amount of individuals we have been able to free thanks to all of YOU. Mikari is now headed to Colorado to lie with his family and start his new life! We also want to thank all of the bond programs and organizations which have assisted us in making sure we free as many folks as we possibly can.
Let this story serve as a reminder of all the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and community members waiting in such conditions in detention, simply for seeking a place or a part in this country. Mikari represents so many others being subject to racist and inhumane policies, and we must not forget the urgency of getting everyone we can out of the Otay Mesa Detention Center. We are so happy to share we have freed yet another person from detention through our Families Reunidas Bond Program, Evens . He is a Haitian asylum seeker who was in detention for 8 months. He was detained in the Otay Mesa Detention Center, which continues to have an extreme number of COVID cases, and even had a birthday and turned 22 years old while detained.

We continue to be frustrated to know such young individuals with their whole lives ahead of them continue to be treated unjustly and held for ransom in such terrible conditions. We find comfort knowing that Evens is now headed to Missouri and be reunited with his father and sponsor! We also want to say thank you to the Bay Area Immigration Bond Fund for assisting us in ensuring this man’s freedom. We wish him the best on his new life and journey ahead!

​While many of us spent the Labor Day weekend recharging and enjoying a much needed break, we want to give a shoutout and thank you to our Day Labor Outreach coordinator Osvaldo and to Tanya for spending their Saturday supporting our amazing day laborers who work tirelessly and don’t have the ease to celebrate this holiday.
They were able to once again responsibly distribute care packages including lunches, hand sanitizer, socks, and also some much needed moral support. We are so grateful to them for work and taking the time to put these packages together, and promoting our culture of love and respect. There is still a low demand for work, and we have seen a significant drop in the amount of them waiting for day jobs. Day laborers’ source of income has suffered greatly with the reduction of traffic throughout home improvement stores, and throughout the county in general. We continue to try to find the best ways to support them wether it be through free remote legal clinics, or finding the most useful items to donate to them. Thanks to Osvaldo’s work on the field, we are able to better cater to the needs of our community, and they know that we will continue to adapt and find ways to better support our day laborers. We thank him for always approaching this community with care and respect, as well as advocating for the needs of a community so beloved to us. We are especially grateful on this holiday dedicated to the American work force, that often overlooks such a critical part of our communities such as them.

SHELTER AID UPDATE:
We share with you some lovely pictures from one of Pro Amore Dei Shelter’s dinners last week, and extend a thank you on behalf of their director Ms. Leticia. They cooked up some delicious carnitas and beans accompanied by drinks for everyone. As an added treat, the kids at this shelter got to enjoy some ice cream for dessert! We are so grateful for all of your generosity and support, as it is through you that we are able to make days like this possible. We love to see our migrant families enjoy some comfort and treats alongside being able to pay another month of rent and utilities for them. Gracias!
