Water drop program
|
Every month, our team ventures into the harsh mountain terrains along migration routes to leave life-saving supplies for those making the perilous journey. Migrants often face extreme conditions—scorching heat, freezing nights, and treacherous paths—leading to dehydration, hypothermia, or physical injury. We strategically place water, food, warm clothing, and first-aid kits in high-traffic areas to prevent unnecessary suffering and death. The unfortunate reality of these routes is that there have been people who sadly passed away in the routes we choose. These missions are critical in ensuring that no one is left behind in these dangerous zones.
Border Angels historically spent our efforts in the Jacumba and Ocotillo deserts to leave water. As migration routes continue to evolve, we made a transition into the Otay Wilderness, as we noticed the desperate need to drop life-saving supplies. Since then, we have had a 92% consumption rate of the items we drop. This data is collected from the time we drop items to the follow-up visit. As part of our mission, we continue to monitor our drop sites in the desert and expand our routes in the Otay Mountains. |

Looking to volunteer? here are some things to consider.
Our Water Drop event is meant for intermediate-to-experienced hikers. Before signing up, please consider the following:
- Your ability to hike with a 40 pound bag for about 5-8 hours.
- Proper gear is required to participate. This includes hiking boots and a large backpack, preferably hiking backpack.
- We recommend you bring hiking pants and a long sleeve shirt, along with a hat. This helps prevent you from being scratched, exposed to the sun, poison oak and ticks.
- Your own transportation
