Through funds provided by the community, the program requests that migrants be released on parole on bail.

Shelter Aid Update:
We love to see shopping carts full with groceries headed back to our beloved migrant shelters. Thanks to your continued support, we are happy to share rent, utilities, and groceries have been paid for another month! We miss our migrant friends in Tijuana so much, and continue to provide assistance in the most responsible ways possible, and cannot wait for the day we are able to be reunited. We are especially grateful to your contributions, as one of the shelters we support now houses 15 pregnant women, and you are helping us make sure they stay strong healthy. We will continue adapting our humanitarian aid to whatever challenge we face, and handle our migrant community with love and care as we always have. Gracias! The summer heat is intense and does not let up. Temperatures have been constant in between 110°-120° for a couple of weeks now, with high humidity on and off.
Our courageous groups were able to leave over 100 gallons of water, along with food, sun protection and socks in dangerous areas where Border Patrol has funneled people crossing with their surveillance and patrol. We know this heat won’t let up soon, we are rotating out all areas that we cover to make sure there’s good coverage throughout the summer. While right now we cannot take new volunteers out, we fill our weekly drops with members of our leadership team and then if there’s spots open we take volunteers who have been out to numerous drops with us. The summer and the extreme heat is not a safe time to learn and experience your first Water Drop. Register via ZOOM: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYlcOGorzItGt2xULVwxcRXNMa_2OQO8YvI ATTENTION: We bonded 7 people out of detention this week! That brings our total to 41 people free from Otay Mesa and Adelanto ICE detention! We are overjoyed and beyond grateful to all of the wonderful organizations that we have collaborated with, and to your amazing support. It is such a triumph to see the number of people we have freed and so many individuals reunited with their loved ones. Meet the two Mexican and Haitian asylum seekers we bonded above: Evens, Raul, and Jesus!
However this great achievement is bittersweet, as we have just learned another life was lost today at a Milwaukee Detention Center. The ongoing threat of COVID inside detention centers is unforgiving, and while it may sound exaggerated, your donations and the Familias Reunidas Bond Program are literally saving lives. It cannot be stressed enough, just how important it is we get as many people out, as we have seen what happens to our folks when we do not. Evens, Raul and Jesus and the 38 others who, we have freed can attest to the nightmarish conditions ongoing in these detention centers. How many more our folks have to parish for our legislators to pay attention? One life lost, is one life too many. We demand our folks in detention #FreeAnd Alive. We demand our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and community members are not forced to wait in such conditions simply for seeking a place or a part in this country. Evens, Raul and Jesus represent so many others being subject to racist and inhumane policies, who have seeked safety in our country and have instead been met with death and injustice. Again, we thank you so much for your support a This holiday weekend further proved that especially during the summer we cannot take time off from the desert. Our limited group scouted a new location, dropped supplies and cleaned up over 20lbs. of trash.
We found a chilling scene of a barrel cactus that was chopped open by a piece of scrap metal found along the freeway. The inside of the cactus was consumed by the person(s) there who had taken whatever limited shade was available. Not more than a hundred feet away was a bottle that contained urine, presumed to be saved for liquid consumption in the most desperate of situations. This past week, it has been over 110° every day, and tomorrow we are headed out where it is expected to around 120°. With these extreme conditions, death in the desert has proven to be a reality, as we found out this week. That is why we are out as much as we can. We are doing everything we possibly can to get supplies to where they are going. While right now we cannot take new volunteers out, we fill our weekly drops with members of our leadership team and then if there’s spots open we take volunteers who have been out to numerous drops with us. The summer and the extreme heat is not a safe time to learn and experience your first Water Drop. We are so happy to celebrate the posting of our 35th Families Reunidas bond! We share with you one more story of the recipients, Mawuli. He is a Ghanian Asylum seeker who spent over 5 months inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center, which continues to be COVID infested.
• We are so grateful once more to the collaboration of Freedom For Immigrants and their continued assistance to free individuals like him! Thanks to your support, he was able to be reunited with his nephew and sponsor in the East Coast, where he will be able to self-quarantine. We use this great victory to continue to drive us, and to help and advocate for those who can’t do so, and free as many individuals as we can. • Let this story serve as a reminder of all the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and community members waiting in such conditions in detention, simply for seeking a place or a part in this country. Mawuli represents so many others being subject to racist and inhumane policies, and we must not forget the urgency of getting everyone we can out of detention. This pandemic continues to be unforgiving, and we will not allow any more lives lost. Again, we thank you for your support and ask you to continue to help us make sure our folks are #FreeAndAlive. The temperature in the desert remains steady around 110°, as it did on June 27. Our groups went out in some of the hottest areas of the desert, trekking in rough terrain for over five hours.
A solid rain season led to an overgrowth and abundance of cholla cactus, leading many people on one group in particular to get caught with cholla over 20 times. No matter how much you try to avoid it, cholla finds a way to stick to you. We collected around 30lbs of waste from the desert, and found around 20 consumed gallons jugs of water from previous drops, as well as a good amount of supplies left behind that had been taken by those on their journey. This is the most dangerous time to be traveling in this region, and we are seeing signs of increase travel. We are still going out weekly. While right now we cannot take new volunteers out, we fill our weekly drops with members of our leadership team and then if there’s spots open we take volunteers who have been out to numerous drops with us. The summer and the extreme heat is not a safe time to learn and experience your first Water Drop. For any questions about Water Drops or our Water Drops during Covid, reach out to Water Drop Program Co-Director James Cordero, [email protected]. Thank you for your continued support, your donations make it easier for us to do our work. We are so happy to share with you one more story of the recipients from our Familias Reunidas Bond Program, Charles. He spent an alarming 6 months inside Adelanto ICE Detention. Another horrific facility notorious for its neglect, more recently, it was reported they were spraying individuals with harmful disinfectants every 15-30 minutes.
This release was especially joyful to us, as we were also able to free his brother Francis a few weeks back from the Otay Mesa Detention Center. When he was picked up he had an enormous smile even after a year of being simultaneously detained here and in Mexico. His sponsor(a third brother), reached out to us and thanked us for after so much hardship, they have all been reunited as a family. We are so grateful our Bond program continues to accomplish what we have set out too do, reuniting loved ones. Let this story serve as a reminder of all the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and community members waiting in such conditions in detention, simply for seeking a place or a part in this country. Charles and Francis represent so many others being subject to racist and inhumane policies, and we must not forget the urgency of getting everyone we can out of detention. This pandemic continues to be unforgiving, and we will not allow any more lives lost. Again, we thank you for your support and ask you to continue to help us make sure our folks are #FreeAndAlive.
Watch Executive Director Dulce Garcia speak on DACA, asylum, the Dream Act, and Immigration overall on CGTN America’s The Heat.
• The historic SCOTUS DACA decision certainly gave us a sigh of relief, but it is not a permanent solution, and it opens up debate: Where do we go from here? How will we implement comprehensive immigration reform in a way that gives our dreamers a path to residency or citizenship? • Dreamers contribute an enormous part to our economy, as property owners, business owners, and like the case of Dulce, even employing many U. S. citizens herself. Dreamers make up a large part of first responders and healthcare workers during this pandemic and are as much a part of this country as everyone else. We will continue to use this decision to advocate for those who risk so much for themselves and this country who is long overdue for accepting Dreamers with open arms. • #daca #dreamers #borderangels #homeishere #heretostay |
