Prevention Through Deterrence was created with hot summer months in mind, and border fence construction of today still carries the same ideas as over 25 years ago.
These canyons we have been in recently are some of the most remote and hardest treks one can attempt to make. As we do our desert cleanup while leaving water and supplies, we can can get a good understanding of how fresh movement is through this area. Thank you to everyone on our team who keeps coming out week after week and putting their bodies on the line to do some good. No matter the weather, nor how extreme the temperatures get, we have not, and will never leave the desert. As long as people are crossing through, we’ll be there. While the temperatures are still extreme, we are only taking experienced Water Drop volunteers for the time being. Thank you all for your understanding. As soon as we can safely take new volunteers we will. For the meanwhile, sharing posts and making donations allow us to continue our work, and be efficient as possible. He is a Mauritanian asylum seeker who was in detention for eight months. As you all know, the Otay Mesa Detention Center continues to have an extreme number of COVID cases, and we are so glad to have one less person exposed.
We are so excited to have bonded out one more person out of the horrible conditions of OMDC, and soon be reunited with his family. After being released, he was able to have an actual meal at Halal Restaurant in City Heights! He is then headed on a plane to be with his aunt and sponsor across the county. We are so grateful that although conditions are difficult and straining, your support has allowed us to continue this program! Let this story serve as a reminder of all the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and community members waiting in such conditions in detention, simply for seeking a place or a part in this country. Thiam represents so many others being subject to racist and inhumane policies, and we must not forget the urgency of getting everyone we can out of the Otay Mesa Detention Center. This pandemic continues to be unforgiving, and we will not allow any more lives lost. Again, we thank you for your support and ask you to continue to help us make sure our folks are #FreeAndAlive. It’s back to school this Monday for our migrant children in Tijuana shelters! We are so happy to see education is a priority for our kids despite everything. This particular shelter was able to buy an anttena for their TV, so they were able to start their virtual classes. We are very grateful to our shelter directors, and of course to all of you for you continued donations. We love to know that on top of providing groceries and basic necessities, you are helping us invest in their futures! THANK YOU!
We are so happy to share we are on a roll and have freed yet another person from detention through our Families Reunidas Bond Program, Pascal . He is a 22 year old Togolese asylum seeker who was in detention for three months. He was detained in the Otay Mesa Detention Center, which continues to have an extreme number of COVID cases, and we are so glad to have one less person exposed.
It pains us knowing someone so young was detained at this facility and facing so much uncertainty. Thankfully, Pascal befriended another asylum seeker inside the detention center who was also freed the same night as he was! They were able to share a decent meal and relax before Pascal heads to Georgia to live with his new sponsor. We are so grateful to the fundraisers and support that continue to make this program possible. We wish him the best on his new life and journey ahead! Let this story serve as a reminder of all the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and community members waiting in such conditions in detention, simply for seeking a place or a part in this country. Pascal represents so many others being subject to racist and inhumane policies, and we must not forget the urgency of getting everyone we can out of the Otay Mesa Detention Center. This pandemic continues to be unforgiving, and we will not allow any more lives lost. Again, we thank you for your support and ask you to continue to help us make sure our folks are #FreeAndAlive. Last week we split into two teams to cover multiple canyons, while facing temperatures of over 125°.
Death Valley is a National Park, and on the same day recorded temperatures of 130°. The Imperial Valley desert canyons reached just about the same temperature as Death Valley, yet no news comes from this area, since it is not a desirable, destination location. People hike for fun in extreme temperatures in Death Valley to test their endurance and stamina or for the ‘gram, while those crossing into the United States walk through this inhospitable terrain for survival. Thank you all for your patience. As soon as we can safely take new volunteers we will. For the meanwhile, sharing posts and making donations allow us to continue our work, and be efficient as possible. We are so happy to share with you one more story of the recipients from our Families Reunidas Bond Program, Ronald. He is a Haitian asylum seeker who was in detention for seven months. As you all know, the Otay Mesa Detention Center continues to have the highest number of COVID cases, and we are so glad to have one less person exposed.
We are so excited to have bonded out one more person out of the horrible conditions of OMDC, and reunited with his family. He is now starting his new life life in Florida and is excited to finally be free. Ronald is the 49th person to be bonded out, and we are continuing to use this momentum to speak out against injustice and get as many individuals out as possible. We are so grateful to all of you for your continued support for ensuring this work continues. We are relying on you to use your voice, and use your platforms to help free our folks. We know how hard it is to feel like you are making a difference in the current state of the world, but it is not remaining silent, and continue to question and put pressure on unfair and unjust policies that brings about change! You all continue to amaze us. We see you, we appreciate you and we thank you! Let this story serve as a reminder of all the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and community members waiting in such conditions in detention, simply for seeking a place or a part in this country. Ronald represents so many others being subject to racist and inhumane policies, and we must not forget the urgency of getting everyone we can out of the Otay Mesa Detention Center. This pandemic continues to be unforgiving, and we will not allow any more lives lost. Again, we thank you for your support and ask you to continue to help us make sure our folks are #FreeAndAlive. |
